‘kaInui’ – Former HOME OF KINLOCH WINES

After highly successful business careers in Melbourne, Malcolm and Susan Kinloch planted 4 Hectares of vines on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range where just out the back the downhill run of “The Man from Snowy River” was filmed and released in 1982 by 20th Century Fox with a cast including Kirk Douglas and Australian actors Jack Thomson, Sigrid Thornton and Tom Burlinson.

The boutique vineyard with a converted hay barn as a cellar door was originally planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and their signature varietal Pinot Meunier which was the only one of this type in the Upper Goulburn Region. Tempranillo, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc were later planted.

Now, as ambassadors for the region, Malcolm and Susan Kinloch promote the talented local vignerons and continue to encourage industry partnerships and iconic food, wine and sporting events such as “ A Day on High ” and THE MANSFIELD  DIAMOND, the richest picnic race meeting  in Australia.

Don Kinloch Sparkling 2008 (named after Malcolm’s father) made to the true French Methode Champenoise tradition won the Victorian 2010 best sparkling white award at Melbourne Federation Square.  The cool climate grapes were hand picked from “Kainui” ensuring  the Meunier’s delicate berry and herb flavour, the Pinot Noir’s sour cherry with the Chardonnay providing the buttery peach and melon flavours.

The focus on a celebratory sparkling wine attracted our interest where the same three grape varieties had been planted that make up French Champagne . Special occasions just wouldn’t be the same without a bottle of bubbly.  Champagne/Sparkling wine is the most intricately complex of all wines to craft. To transfer the acidic juice into the most celebrated bubbles on earth, pressing, settling of the solids and impurities from the must, first fermentation, blending, tirage, bottling, second fermentation, maturation, riddling and disgorgement takes place. The microclimate and of course the winemakers expertise all contribute to the flavour and aromatic profile.

We look forward to continuing to grow the grapes that produced the very popular Don Kinloch Sparkling and in collaboration with acclaimed and passionate winemakers Ros Ritchie  www.rosritchiewines.com and Damien Cofield  www.cofieldwines.com.au are very excited to introduce  “Sparkling Sally” from the grapes of the 2019 harvest and Pilot’s Pinot Noir where guests can enjoy establishing the constellations on the label projected above the property GPS co-ordinates with the Celestron telescope and Ipad Star Tracker.
